AMF Bowling Background

Bowling has always been a fun family sport that can be enjoyed by people of all different ages. It does not matter if you are a man or a woman or a boy or a girl to be able to participate. Bowling is both an individual sport as well as a competitive sport. Unlike other sports like basketball or football, there is no one trying to keep you from scoring. You must rely on your own skills as well as your mental toughness and perhaps a little luck to get the best score possible. One of the major participants in the bowling industry is AMF.

The history of AMF traces all the way back to the year 1900. The American Machine and Foundry Company produced industrial machinery used by tobacco farmers and the tobacco industry. While bowling had been around for many years, it did not really gain capture the attention of the public until the invention of the automatic pinsetter in the period just after the end of World War II. With the introduction of this new technology, bowling suddenly became a viable participatory sport for millions. AMF entered the bowling business and has since become the dominant player in the industry.

Today, there are over 300 AMF bowling centers around the United States and many more around the world. Australia and New Zealand are just two of the places outside of America where bowling has achieved great popularity and AMF is an acknowledged leader in the industry.

Well over 10,000 people are employed by AMF. The average pay for full-time jobs in this labor-intensive industry is around $40,000 per year. There are many part time jobs where workers receive a competitive hourly wage and many more jobs are created with ancillary businesses that are related to the AMF bowling centers.

Who Bowls?

AMF bowling alleys attract people from all backgrounds. There are regular league competitions where participants compete for cash prizes and trophies. Bowling is the number one participatory sport in the United States. More than 20 million bowlers visit AMF bowling centers each year.

AMF Bowling Centers are designed around bowling but also function as an entertainment center for the entire community. In addition to the 16, 32 or more alleys, most centers also have billiard or pool tables and a game room with the latest video games. There is usually a small on-site shop staffed by a bowling professional that sells bowling balls and other bowling supplies. This is usually the best place to buy your bowling equipment as you will get expert advice about the type of ball best suited for your game and proper fitting for the grip on the ball. You can also buy shoes, wrist straps and other accessories that can help improve your game.

Bowling centers are a great venue for birthday parties for kids. Setting up a birthday party for 25 kids is just one of the many activities a well managed alley includes in its schedule of events. For about $10 per child, the bowling alley provides food and cake plus a few games of bowling. They decorate the area with balloons and give prizes to the best bowlers. The birthday boy or girl always gets a nice gift.

AMF's Atmosphere

Just about every AMF Bowling Center has a restaurant or snack bar. Some are operated by AMF and the owners of the bowling alley, while others are separate operations that lease space for the opportunity to do business in the alley. In any event, a busy bowling alley is a great place to operate a small restaurant, bar or snack concession. The jobs created because of the relationship with the bowling alley add substantially to the more than 10,000 people that receive a paycheck from AMF and the owners of the alley.

AMF was once in many different businesses. At one time, they counted Harley Davidson Motorcycle, Ben Hogan Golf Clubs, Hatteras Yachts and Voit basketballs among their divisions. In the late 70s, the company began having problems managing such a wide array of businesses. In 1985, AMF was sold to a Minnesota firm called Minstar, who systematically sold off the non-core businesses. Today, AMF is largely focused on the bowling and entertainment industry. Together, with an Italian partner, they are one of the largest manufacturers of bowling and amusement equipment in the world.

AMF is also a very community oriented company. They hold a number of charitable and fundraising events every year to help the neediest members of the community. There are Junior Bowl-A Thons that raise funds to further the educational pursuit of young men and women that can not afford to pay for college. At risk youth are helped in the Tampa area with AMF's Blue for Kids celebrity bowling tournament that hosts famous athletes, movie stars and other celebrities with the proceeds going to the charitable cause.
