History of Bed Bath & Beyond

Bed Bath & Beyond was founded by Leonard Feinstein and Warren Eisenberg in 1971 with the original name of Bed 'n Bath. It began as a small chain of discount linen stores in New York. The store began to grow steadily boasting 17 stores in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and California in 1985. Due to the sudden influx of many other similar discount linen stores, Feinstein and Eisenberg decided to open their first superstore to set them apart from the competition.

The new superstore grew from offering just linens to offering a wide variety of household products. The size of the store grew by over ten times the original size. They were different from any other store in that they offered every brand imaginable instead of making all their own products. They changed their name to Bed Bath & Beyond.

In the early nineties, the growth of the company skyrocketed. New stores started popping up all over the country. Word of mouth was one of their biggest forms of marketing because of their excellent customer service, family atmosphere, and unique marketing for household products. With Bed Bath & Beyond's increase in popularity came new excitement for linens and other home products.

Bed Bath & Beyond went public on the NASDAQ in June of 1992. Its stock soon skyrocketed in value and popularity. They expanded into small appliances in 1994 and still enjoy increased success, even while other household product stores struggle.
