The Relay from Calistoga to Santa Cruz

Relay logo.gif

The DIPSrunclub has participated in this annual relay race since 2003. From 2003 until 2005 the relay took place in the Fall but in 2006 the organizers rescheduled the event. Since then the relay has taken place in the Spring. Teams of 12 persons run the 199 miles from Calistoga to Santa Cruz. Each runner run three legs of between 3 to 9 miles. The race continues throughout the night and pretty much all runners will run at least one leg in the dark. For details, see the offical relay web site.

Participation in the Dipsea race and/or the Relay is a hallmark of membership in the Dips Running Club. After all, the relay is the most fun you can have on one hour of sleep. Sure running the relay hurts: you suffer from lack of sleep; you sit in a van for hours; your legs stiffen; you eat only energy bars and lousy food. Yet it is strangely satisfying and fun. It is all teamwork. It cleanses your spirit. You live in the moment. You serve your fellow runners and you run. You and your team are forever bound by the experience and the commiseration.
