Malcom then attended Monash University to complete a DipEd(Second) in 1978. Employment started as a teacher linguist at Strelley Station in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Malcom was actually returning to Strelley because he worked there during a Christmas holiday for 15 weeks - during the hottest part of the year. The teacher linguist role was for 1979-80 at Strelley, and then at a sister school at nearby Warralong 1981-1982. It was at Strelley that Malcom met Merlin Laura Francis(nee Bruce) and they later married in Melbourne in 1985. After Warralong, Malcom and Merlin moved back to Melbourne, and Malcom began work at the Aboriginal Research Centre at Monash University as a Research Assistant. This was from 1983-1984. Malcom's next role was as a coordinator at the Worawa Aboriginal School in Healesville, from 1985-1986. Then it was off to Central Australia to work as the Principal of Ernabella Aboriginal School, 1987-1988, and then as Manager of the Aboriginal Resource Centre also at Ernabella, 1989-1990. While at Ernabella, Laura was born in 1987. Then along came a stint as the Principal of Mt Burr Primary School in the South East of South Australia for four years, 1991-1993 While at Ernabella and Mt Burr, Malcom studied for his Master of Education (Education Administration) and graduated in 1997. When Malcom and Merlin moved back to Melbourne in 1994, Malcom worked at his sister-in-law's tea rooms for two years, then on to Officeworks Ferntree Gully in 1998. Malcom is still at Officeworks, but has been working at their head office in East Bentleigh for the last five years on various projects. At the same time Malcom has been publishing a bi-monthly newsletter for schools called 'Interact'. See it at

Letter from Peter, dated 09.03.07, addressed to Val Mortimer: Firstly I resigned from the public service in 1995 and moved to Bellingen to start up a lime and macadamia farm. It was started from scratch, was hard but very rewarding. Unfortunately my marriage to Karina ended abruptly and very acrimoniously in 2000 so the farm had to be sold to pay her out.
In October 2000 while running a bingo night for Lions at the local Bellingen RSL I met a lovely lady by the name of Sandra and we haven't been apart since January 2001. We moved to Valla Beach in 2002, which is about 5 kilometres North of Nambucca Heads. And then like you in 2004 we moved to a residential lifestyle village where the residents are 55 and over and have no children at home. We both love it here.
In 1997 I joined the Lions club of Bellingen, then transferred to Valla Lions in 2002. After serving on the District Cabinet from 2000 I was nominated and elected to the position of District Governor for the year 2006/07, so I've nearly finished my term now. It has been great with our visits to 70 clubs in and around this state clocking up 35,000 kilometres, so far. We get a small allowance per kilometre, but mostly it is for the love of doing things for the people less fortunate than ourselves.
We always are very busy and it makes one wonder how we had time to go to work! When I have finished my year as DG of Lions, even though I will be given other duties and responsibilities I have decided to run for the local shire council (Nambucca Shire) the elections being in September 2008. So there is always a plan to be doing something, and keeping busy and active. Sandra and I walk the beach most mornings when the tide is low, although it has been a bit difficult to do that regularly this year.
Well I'm glad to hear that you are both well. And yes I did hear that Kath Veryard had died through my children, 2 of whom are still in Perth. Good luck with getting any proceeds from the will! If my memory serves me well after Grandpa died, all the will was transferred to the Rossiter clan. I remember Dad being very put out because his oar from the Head of the River, which was located in the garage at 66 Cleaver street, disappeared. He was cranky about not having it passed onto him.
Kim is 31 and a single mum to Joshua 7(but looking hard for Mr Right!), Matthew is 27, no children but has just found the right woman, Kate. Daniel is 25, also no children and has a live-in partner Kathryn. Matthew passed his maths degree with honours and works for the WA Institute for the blind, Kim does full-time work at IGA Victoria Park and Daniel, who completed a double degree in Maths and Commerce, (also with Honours) won a scholarship to the Reserve Bank in Sydney. Daniel dropped a bombshell recently when he advised us that he is going to quit the Reserve bank after 6 years and is going to bicycle around Europe for 18 months.
Sandra also has three children, also, almost identical ages as well. They are better breeders than the Veryards as we have 6 grandchildren on Sandra's side and only one on my side.
Mum is going well, 85 on March 31st, and she still lives by herself in a block of retirement units in Tweed Heads. Her address is 3/20 Banks Ave, Tweed Heads. Telephone Number (07) 55365248. Of course, Anne and David live close by and are able to keep in close and regular contact.
Jacqueline (Jackie) lives on property in Bellingen with Murray and 2 of her 4 children. Her address is 527 Kalang Road, Bellingen and her telephone number is (02) 66552443.
Our address, for postage is 7/1 Regatta Drive, Valla Beach, 2448, but for visiting it is 7 Magnolia Drive Valla Beach Resort, Valla Beach. Our telephone number is (02) 65695455.

Laura Emily Brown
I'm a Sagittarian, Vegetarian, budding costumier. I was born in Alice Springs hospital on December 9th 1987, during the decade of shoulder pads and taffeta. I was the best present my nanna ever got (so she says) I dont remember anything of my life in the dessert because my family moved to Mt Burr when I was 3. Mt Burr is a town in South Australia where everyone knows everyone and the thing to do was get lost in the pine farm or buy lollies at the service station. I attended kinder and prep there, I was young but I remember some good times had there. After the short time in Mt Burr I moved to Melbourne where I'm enjoying life at Tafe studying Costume design and meeting interesting and diverse people. My previous education was at Belgrave South Primary school in which i went on school exchange to New Zealand in 1999. Definately a fun experience. Then came Mater Christi College, graduating in 2005. That was 6 years of making life long friends and working out what i wanted to do when I was older, also picking up some handy information on the way. My first job was at a seconds fabric store in Belgrave where, most days, i walked out with more fabrics than pay. My second job: Waitress and Barista at Kallista Tea rooms. I've had the opportunity to partake in work experience at Myer fashion festival, dressing models and handling thousands of dollars worth of clothes. Now my holidays are spent going to concerts, particularly Silverchair, a band ive followed for quite some time now. Can't wait to see what next year brings. Laura completed her degree in Costume Design at the Prahran College in 2008 and then commenced work at Zart Art almost immediately. She travelled overseas in 2009 all around Europe and South Africa with her friend Jo. Laura now lives in Glen Iris with Nathan Clarke who also works with Zart Art.
