Gui Blooper Examples

From BluWiki

This page documents some GUI Bloopers that our class comes across.

1. The Bison Login Screen (by Frank McCown)

Do you notice any important information missing? Which field would you infer was for the username and password based on the labels underneath? You'd be wrong!

2. Scottrade trading screen (by Adam Smith)

The child window's X button on the top right corner does not function, OK button's k is not capitalized, and the main window has cluttered buttons.

3. VentriloServers.biz Login Page (by Rae Melton)

This is the only place where you can retrieve your username or password, but the link not only isn't where you normally find it in the log in group box, but it looks like a graphical ad that the average person would overlook.

4. Super scooter (by Misael Cojtin)

This is a clear example of exposing implementation to the user, the word sprite is not a regular term used by everyone.

5.Adobe Reader Installer (Win 7) (By Brent Walker)

Adobe Reader's installer...

...unnecessarily opens a second window...

...(there is no more relevant information from the first one), and if the windows are minimized and re-opened, the first one pops up on top of the new one, hiding the relevant information.

6. Initial Startup Dialog Box for MS Visual Studio (by Ben Pschierl)

When Microsoft Visual Studio is executed for the first time after installation, this dialog box appears, usually delaying the start of the program by several minutes. The dialog box displays a phony progress bar since it gives no indication as to how much progress has been made. It also gives no estimated time until the configuration is completed other than letting the user know that it "might take a few minutes." Finally, the user does not have the option of cancelling the operation since there are no buttons at all.

7. Link to Itself(Mark Perreault)

On the tuneusin.com homepage the home link is still active. This is considered a GUI blooper because whenever the website is on its homepage the home link should not be active.

8. Too many Tabs.(Angela Withrow)

The Education Resource Center Circulation website keeps track of the library system in the Education Resource Center. There are all kinds of tabs on the Library Search page and it is not pleasing to the eye and hard to find what you are looking for. This falls under the blooper of having too many tabs.

9. Wrong use of ...(Scott Herring)

AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), under "Help", has a menu item that says "About AIM...". The ellipsis implies that there is more to be done after clicking that menu item before the task is completed, but this is not the case, because it just displays a copyright dialog box.

10. Vague Error Message.(Robert Montgomery)

The inventory program for Harding's camera room alerts you if you attempt to check an item into the wrong location and will allow you to change the item's location if you need to. Unfortunately, it does not tell where the items current location is supposed to be.

11. Bad Page Navigation. (Brett Jones)

In the once-popular homestarrunner.com website, clicking on 'back' after the end of a flash video takes the user back 2 menus, skipping the menu on which the video link itself was located.
