IHOP Background

The first International House of Pancakes opened up on July 7, 1958 in Toluca Lake, California by Al and Jerry Lapin. The company then began expanding through franchising in 1960. It wasn't until 1973 that the acronym IHOP came to be.

By 1979, all restaurants had IHOP signs. IHOP's famous Rooty Tooty Fresh 'n Fruity showed up on the menu in 1985. Cliff Blemis was the restaurant's spokesperson and created many commercials for over a decade. By 1992, 500 IHOP restaurants had opened, and by 2001, there were a thousand. As of December 31, 2010, there were 1,504 IHOP restaurants in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

About IHOP's Approach

The company's slogan "Come hungry. Leave Happy" appeared in 2003. IHOP and Applebee's merged in 2007, giving IHOP 3,300 more restaurants to be in charge of. The company's headquarters is located in Glendale, California and has been going strong for over 50 years.
