[edit] Tweets of Note
[1] This ties in directly to the Plings Selecta. All the more reason to get this tool fine tuned and published so people can start printing their leaflets!
[2] Can you use your youth council as mini media promotors?
[3] Advertising on buses and trains cost probhibative but radio is a good channel!
[4] Selling positive activities as CV additions?
[edit] Discussion
Bill from Leicester asks about the legal duty and whether it is enforceable, and so how can it be fully implemented
Clare from Nottingham stresses the importance of partnerships
Harry from Gateshead calls for a stronger definition of positive activities. Does IAG, Sexual Health or other drop in style count?
Carol from Knowsley suggests to use the year cycle (summer, Nov 5th, etc) to coordinate and enthuse partners
Clare from Nottingham talks about use of Facebook and how it has vastly increased the traffic to their youth offer
Harry from Gateshead tells us that they are already involved in a pilot project where young people mystery shop activities. The findings of this will hopefully be published in the future.
[edit] PlingBack
From discussion regarding feedback, activity providers could be given the option to "opt out" of allowing people to give feedback on their activities. Obviously this would speak about the provider. This opt-out would need to be an additional field in the Plings dataset? Obviously anyone using the output API would be able to ignore this field entirely and take feedback on any provider, I doubt there is any way to prevent this.
(Notes from Tim Davies)
- In an earlier proposal about PlingBack I sketched the idea of specifying whether or not someone is 'Listening' to any given feedback (so young people can decide whether it's worth giving feedback or not). The people listening could be the providers, the local authority, central government etc.
- This information would sit in the PlingBack platform rather than Plings API.
- If basic feedback is always allowed, then providers could opt-in to more in-depth feedback (e.g. always star rating & quick comment widgets provided, but more in depth feedback only when provider chooses to turn that on and promises that they are listening and will respond to feedback).
(/Notes from Tim Davies)
From discussion regarding feedback. Young people could be able to state they are attending in advance, then are sent a feedback request via email or SMS once the activity has taken place inviting them to give feedback. Potentially use rewards and incentives to encourage feedback. I'm feeling that this is probably something that would be need to be done on a local level rather than a Plings level unless there is going to be some kind of standard framework for collected and aggregating Plingback at the Plings end. Imagine this could be tied into the below idea for postcards which could be inputted through an admin interface. Should be relatively simple to code using PHP and MySQL.
(Notes from Tim Davies) If we use the Talis platform, and store feedback in RDF, then we can allow flexibility at the local level, whilst having the possibility of bringing feedback together centrally.
I would see the 'indicate you are attending and get asked for feedback' as an application that someone could build on top of Plings either locally, or nationally as a service to offer to local areas.
It's not though a core Plings service. (/Notes)
From discussion regarding feedback. Print postcards with Plings activity ID's on them to give out at activities for young people to return including their feedback on the event. Freepost postcards may be needed and rewards and incentives to encourage returns. Again this could feed into the same database as the electronic feedback by SMS/Web/Email detailed above.
[edit] Boredometer
Harry Harrold has been working on the Boredometer which is now in Bebo and Facebook as an application. Application works by allowing young people to set times when they are bored and choose activities taking place during those times. Young people can also shout to their friends for help and have activities suggested to them by friends.
Also the Boredometer Administrator Tools (BAT - Facebook only?) allows local authorities to see statistics for the amount of young people using boredometer in their area and suggest activities to these young people. BAT is only accessible by getting a LA Key from Harry or Substance.
