LEARN - Taking back control of YOUR learning.

From the moment you are born (and perhaps even before birth) you started learning unconsciously about yourself, others and the place around you.

This natural learning developed gradually into conscious learning and saw the development of speech ad communication and many other learning achievements. This learning was done without fear of failure and if you didn't succeed at first, you kept trying until you could do it!

When you entered formal education you had to go to a definite place, you were told what to learn even if you weren't interested and you were told when to learn it.

Everyone was treated the same. You became just one sunflower in a field of sunflowers. Much of what you learnt in formal education was disregarded or forgotten quickly once the 'test' was completed.

BUT - you live in exciting times!

The information in the world is expanding at an ever increasing rate. You can use the internet to have almost instant communication of that knowledge in almost any form. If you want interaction with other people then the technology is there for communication. Each year also sees new developments of technology.

The difficulty is information overload!

This site exists to assist you in making your learning easier and more powerful.

SOME BASIC BELIEFS

  • You have the right to choose what you will learn.
  • You can be both a learner and teacher.
  • You are unique and have your own learning path.
  • You learn from birth and learning is whole of life.

STEPS IN LEARNING

Self-directed learning is a natural step for most people. With the internet available, online self-learning is becoming more common.

Researchers have shown that most people spend about 100 hours on each of up to 5 projects a year. These all follow a learning plan of chosing what to learn, finding information, processing that information and then recalling and using that information to do their project, even though that plan is often not written down on paper.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO CREATING YOUR PLAN

This is about asking WHY DO I WANT TO DO THIS PROJECT? Choosing your starting point helps you understand what you want out of the learning experience. Some people write it down as part of their planning. It is also includes understanding where you are now in relation to your learning and what past learning is important.

A GOAL IS SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO. Once you have your starting point, then you will need to SET GOALS for what you want to achieve. Goal setting can be as simple as thinking about it, to a full goal setting program. There are different apparoaches to goal setting but the important thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong way to set goals. Just setting them gives you an advantage.

The third step is to decide how you are going to achieve your goal. This means searching for resources that you might use. As we want to learn online this means focussing on search engines, other people and for those people 'print bound' it includes books, either ordered online or locally.

The fourth step is putting the plan into action - JUST DO IT! - Most of us are already too busy in our daily lives to fit anything else in, so it is important to look at the issue of TIME MANAGEMENT. If you are going to achieve your goal then you may need to sacrifice something else to fit it all in.

Of course learning and keeping to our goals takes some effort . So there is the need for motivation and affirmations for those times you need them. This can be such things as getting in the habit of saying positive things about yourself and your learning, reducing negative self talk, and 'seeing' your goal as a picture

It is easier to make corrections early on if you start to stray so there is a need for some system for tracking your progress through simple tools such as charts, graphs and learning journals. Tracking is also an excellent motivator as you see yourself moving towards your goal.

After all your hard work achieving your goals, the last step is to record it in a portfolio. This becomes your record of achievements which is valuable both for motivating yourself and to show other people your achievements.

KEYS TO LEARNING

HOW YOU LEARN

LEARNING is the process where you receive information through your senses, organise it, store and recall that information and then apply that learning in your life

  • RECEIVE information: how to optimise your senses of sight, sound, taste, touch, smell and even your '6th' sense.
  • ORGANISE information: the brain, multiple intelligences and mind-mapping.
  • STORE AND RECALL information: memory, files, search tools
  • APPLY information: actions and habits, transforming learning and passing on the information to others.

WHAT TO LEARN

When you are ready to learn, with the tools to manage your learning, you need to choose just what you will learn. Here you will find an outline of learning areas:
