[edit] The Silverwood
Home to Wood Elves.
The origin of this name is unknown to most scholars. The trees have no silvery shine to them. This forest seems to have a life of its own. Though elves live there, few other humanoids dare venture in. Bad things tend to happen to those who cut the trees of the forest, or so it is said. Since people are loath to harvest this wood, the forest is slowly growing out, and people retreat before it rather than put an axe to the new saplings. It is said creatures from the days of old inhabit the dark central portion of this wood. Sightings of strange creatures unknown to the sages and bards are not uncommon. There are also known to be dire wolves.
300 years ago, the forest of Silverwood was much larger than it is now, and the barren region near Rivenblight was completely covered in forest except for a dirt road cut through by small populations of humans. Then the Rivenblight catastrophe occurred, sending shockwaves through the earth for miles, severing the roots of all the trees in that horizontal stretch.
Now, 300 years later, the Silverwood, once a magnificent forest with no interruptions for miles, has been greatly reduced in size around the edges, and the middle region, now sparsely covered with young trees among the hollow husks of dead trees, is nowhere near full recovery.
Cartographers cannot agree what to name the now separated forested regions. The elves wish to respect the old ages and continue calling all the forests "the Silverwood". Newer, younger humans are beginning to name the various patches of forests according to their local names. This "cartography war" has been ongoing for three centuries, and slowly, the humans are winning.
[edit] The Faerie Woods
120 miles northeast of Orussus, there is a small section of woodlands primarily inhabited by the Fey. This woodland is the southernmost tip of the Silverwood, and touches upon the Larkenwold Reach. The fey here range from the more usual, such as brownies and pixies, to fearsome and rare types of fey. At least one, Ragewalker, is known to be held in one of the warded clearings, unable to leave but deadly to any that stumble upon him. An infamous Redcap from this area was slain by adventurers in the course of the adventure The Faerie Woods. The Fey Lord, who lives in Under-the-Hill, has a great deal of influence over the Fairie Woods, though he is trapped in that pocket dimension and cannot (as yet) physically enter Enworld.
[edit] The Wyrwood
North of the Faerie Woods is an ancient part of the Silverwood. The local humans call this area the Wyrwood, in part because of the mystical, ghostly protection it seems to have. Protected by a circle of druids, the sundering of the Silverwood barely affected this region. Home to the Wyrwood Monastery, a school of martial, musical, and philosophical training, housed in a giant mushroom.
Wyrwood Oak: The liveoaks of the Wyrwood are incredibly ancient, but they have recently been under the close watch of a druidic circle. Wyrwood Oaks, having spent centuries practically saturated in druidic magic, now have special properties unlike the trees of any other forest. When a great oak's life comes to an end, the druids cut down the tree and use its supple wood for many purposes. One in particular is the construction of instruments. Wyrwood Oak is magnificent for resonating rich tones, and Wyrwood instruments are coveted for their unique sound. A musical instrument made out of Wyrwood Oak from a tree felled by druids grants its user a +1 alchemical bonus on all Perform checks made with that instrument.
