Some important changes that the cell phone has gone through over the years. In the beginning cell phones were used for making phone calls to people that were constantly on the move. Many of those people happened to be businessmen. Another reason businessmen were some of the first people to have cell phones was because of the cost associated with them. The phone was very expensive and so was the plan itself. The reason it was so much was because the technology was still very new and there were not a lot of options out there. Businesses however were able to help with the cost because of expenses. The first new phones had a limited talk time and a short battery life. However, because many people did not own cell phones, they were not used all the time. In the 1990s is when the public started to use cell phones more often. As it is often times, it either the early adopters or the rich who went out to by cell phones. Early adopters are people who go out and buy the newest technology because they like to have it. Rich people just like to have status symbols or whatever they have to pay a lot of money to buy so they can show off. One of the first big changes that the cell phone went through was size. The old cell phones were large and as neat as they were to have, they would also inspire jokes. Therefore, companies decided that they needed to make their cell phone smaller and more hand held and easy to carry around. The next issue cell phone manufacturers addressed was the battery life of a phone. There were always two times that came with a cell phone addressing batteries. There was standby time, the time one was able to keep their phone on, and talk time, the amount of time one was able to talk on their phone. Standby times were constantly becoming longer but the talk time was not growing as fast. Users were looking for a phone with a longer talk time because what good is a phone if you can keep it on but not talk on it. After the battery was fixed, cell phone companies learned that they had made cell phones to small. Because the previous trend was to see which company was able to make the smallest phone, it went until the phones were almost to small to be practical. This inspired another shift into making phones that had the most features regardless of size. So after size was no longer an issue, cell phone manufacturers were able to focus on the phone and what the phone would be able to do. Phones started coming with different keyboards, screens, and applications. That is what the current trend is now, what phone can do the most stuff. That was the phone itself, everybody also wanted the best ringtones, but that is another story. Maybe like when the trend was to go small a phone will one day just do to much to even be useful and then the trend will change to simplifying.
