Scratches on LCD

From BluWiki

I did an experiment to determine which angle of scratches are the worst on an LCD. I put a scratch on a thin piece of plastic, then placed it on the surface of the LCD and rotated it. I concluded that vertical is worst, followed by horizontal, and that diagonal was least-visible/annoying.

The vertical scratch appears as a rainbow and shifts when your head moves to the side. The horizontal scratch shifts slightly when you move your head up or down. The diagonal scratch hardly changes, so it easier to get used to, as it looks like part of the image.

This is relevant to cleaning an LCD; the above suggests that you should wipe diagonally, not up-and-down or side-to-side. Of course you should use a proper cleaning cloth to minimize the chance of scratching in the first place.
