Quick Help

  • This is a wiki. That means three main things:
    1. It uses markup to format pages -- a simpler markup than HTML. In most cases, you may freely mix in HTML markup, too.
    2. Anybody (generally) can edit any page.
    3. Old versions of each page are stored under "Page History", so nothing is ever lost. Don't worry about messing up.
  • Press "Show preview" to see what your edit will do.
  • It's usually a good idea to put a few words into the edit Summary. This text will show up in the History.
  • Don't forget to press "Save Page" before closing your browser. Failure to save is the leading cause of editing frustration.
  • Change your editing preferences at Special:Preferences. You can choose how links are formatted, whether previews appear above or below the editing box, etc.
  • Consider editing the page in a word processor. Click "Edit this page", copy the entire markup text, paste it into your word processor. Edit the markup -- add or delete text, change the formatting, check spelling. Then reverse the process; copy the markup and paste it into the wiki edit box.
  • Please feel free to experiment. This is the best way to see what things do. Click something! Try it! It's really very easy.

* Lists are easy to do:
** start every line with a star
*** more stars means deeper levels

# Start numbered lists with a hash
## more hashes means deeper levels
# and each hash is a new number

Ordinary text starts at the left margin

  • Four tildes in a row are replaced with your user name and a datestamp -- a handy way to "sign" your edits. You can change your signature in Preferences.

Editing help on Wikimedia

  • Link to another page within BluWiki with a double pair of brackets. If you type a pipe, the alternate text will be displayed, but the link will go to the same place.
  • Note that the standard way to create a new wiki page is simply to edit an existing page and add a link to the new page. When you click on the new link, you will go directly to an edit box for the new page.
  • External links work a bit differently. Enclose the full URL in a single pair of brackets. If you type a space, alternate text will be shown; otherwise, the link appears only as a reference number.

  • Upload images by clicking "Upload File". JPEGs, GIFs, and PNGs may all be used.
  • A colon inside the markup gives you a link, not the image itself.
  • Make thumbnails with the magic word thumb and specify width. Text after the last pipe will display as a caption.
{{templatedemo}}

{{tl|templatedemo}}

{{box|Demo Box|Hello, world!}}

{{templatedemo}}

  • If there's a page named Template:Foo, then the markup {{foo}} (a pair of double braces) will be rendered as the entire contents of the template page.
  • {{tl|foo}} creates a clickable link to the template page instead.
  • Some templates take parameters, separated by pipes. See the documentation on each template's Talk page for more information about usage and parameters.

A last word

People with no computer skills at all use wikis every day. It's that easy. And truly, it's impossible to really mess it up. Really!
