Shedd Aquarium Savings

Rated as one of Chicago’s top cultural institutions, the John G. Shedd Aquarium is one of the nation’s largest indoor aquariums. The aquarium opened in 1930 as the vision of the retired president of Marshall Field and Company, John G. Shedd.

The aquarium was a grand and bold addition to the Chicago cultural landscape. Mr. Shedd provided the early funding to establish the aquarium and to complement the other cultural institutions that were located in Chicago. The aquarium was named in his honor.

The Shedd Aquarium is located in Grant Park on the shores of the Lake Michigan waterfront and very close to other Chicago cultural institutions such as the Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum of Natural History.

The Shedd Aquarium is housed in a beautiful Beaux Arts building that is a well-recognized landmark by many Chicagoans.

Shedd Aquarium Exhibits

The Shedd Aquarium has over 22,000 aquatic animals that include fishes, amphibians, reptiles, marine mammals, birds and insects. The aquarium has five permanent exhibits that include Amazon Rising, Oceanarium, Waters of the World, Caribbean Reef and Wild Reef.

These exhibits include aquatic animals that represent more than 1,500 species. The aquarium has a diverse collection of animals from all regions of the world including Africa, Asia, and even from nearby Lake Michigan. Many of these exhibits include popular attractions such beluga whales, sharks, coral reefs, iguanas, and lungfish.

The Oceanarium, with its curved wall of glass giving viewers a panoramic view of Lake Michigan is a newer addition that was added in 1971. The modern architecture of the Oceanarium was incorporated into the design of the original building. It included using some of the marble from the original building as part of the new facility.

The Oceanarium allows visitors to experience the marine mammals such as beluga whales, dolphins, otters, and seals in their simulated Pacific Northwest environments. Another fascinating area in Oceanarium is the Falkland Island habitat that houses a colony of penguins in a natural setting.

The Waters of the World features freshwater and saltwater exhibits such as the Amazon River, Tropical Waters, Invasive Species, Illinois Lakes, and salt water animals of cold oceans. These exhibits give visitors a chance to see the diverse waters that encompass the globe.

In addition to the five larger exhibits, there are a number of exhibits that are very popular among those who visit the Shedd Aquarium. The Polar Play Zone is geared toward kids that love to play in water. The interactive exhibit allows children to dress up like a penguin or a deep-sea explorer and interface with the aquatic animals in the exhibit.

The Explore by Exhibit at the Shedd Aquarium is the aquatic show featuring dolphins and beluga whales.

Top Attractions

One of the Shedd Aquarium most venerable attractions is Granddad. Granddad is the aquarium’s beloved Australian lungfish. Granddad has been at the aquarium since almost the very beginning, arriving in 1933.

Granddad is more than 80 years old and is older than any other resident at the Shedd Aquarium. There are those that claim Granddad is the oldest fish of any aquarium in the world. The Australian lungfish is a threatened species and the Shedd Aquarium has four other lungfish in their breeding program. Granddad is a must-see for anyone visiting the aquarium.
