Sketchers, The Company
The popular shoe company Skechers was started by the father and son team Robert and Michael Greenberg in 1992 as a distributor for Doc Martens shoe brand so popular with teenagers and college students. Greenberg Sr. had been the creative force behind the trendy and successful clothing company LA Gear, but was removed from its board in 1992.
In 1995, the company began selling its own branded boots and skateboarding shoes. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and Skechers began “flattering” is competitors by developing knock-offs of some of their more successful products. Today the Manhattan Beach, California-based company designs and markets over 900 different styles of shoes, focusing on the trendy, casual styles that appeal to men and women between the ages of 18 and 40.
Sketchers Financial Information
Skechers Inc is a publicly traded company although its founders Robert and Michael Greenberg own 60 percent of its stock.
The company is valued at well over one billion dollars and maintains a global presence with specialty retail outlets in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, the Benelux region, Brazil, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand as well as over 75 other countries and territories.
Where to Buy
In addition to its own branded retail outlets, some of which are owned by the company and some of which are owned by franchise holder, Skechers also distributes its shoe brand through Macy’s, Shoe Pavilion, Finish Line and Foot Locker.
In its early days, the company made use of roving bands of “style spotters,” who would roam the streets making note of the most popular styles, especially any customized styling and personal embellishments added by their owners that made these shoes more eye-catching.
Skechers then quickly manufactured its own version of the shoe. By the time the original shoes became a trend, Skechers would have its own lower priced interpretation of the look in mall stores.
Unsurprisingly, these copy cat maneuvers have led to a number of legal actions against Skechers brought by other shoe companies who felt that their “concept” had been ripped off; the most recent of these was a lawsuit brought by Crocs Inc the manufacturers of a distinctive brand of molded plastic clogs.
The lawsuit was settled out of court and one of the terms of the settlement was that Skechers would discontinue the manufacture of certain of the Croc lookalikes.
Skechers manufactures over 3,000 shoe style for men and women of all ages across a wide spectrum of product categories. Among the most popular Skechers offerings are Shape-Ups by Skechers with a distinctive round sole, marketed as a “toning” shoe. Skechers claims that wearing the shoe promotes weight loss, firms muscle tone, and improves posture without the need for any more rigorous exercise than walking.
In August 2010, a lawsuit was filed against Skechers by a 38 year old waitress named Holly Ward who claimed that wearing Shape-Ups had caused her to suffer stress fractures in both her hips. A federal class-action lawsuit is also pending that claims Skechers has deliberately exaggerated the health benefits of its Shape-Ups and that the ads the company runs that have led to millions of dollars worth of sales are misleading.
