Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a worldwide chain of fast-food restaurants that serves variations of Mexican-American food: nachos, burritos, tacos and quesadillas. A nacho is a pile of fried corn chips with cheese and chunky tomato sauce.

A taco is an open-faced sandwich with various types of meat and vegetable fillings and flour or corn tortillas instead of bread. A burrito is a closed version of a taco and a quesadilla is a grilled or toasted version of a flattened burrito. All come with a chunky tomato sauce that can vary from mild to spicy.

The corporate headquarters of Taco Bell is in Irvine, California. Taco Bell itself is a subsidiary of the vast Yum! Brands, a global corporation that also owns Pizza Hut, Long John Silver's, A&W Restaurants and KFC, formerly known as Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Yum! Brands

Yum! Brands, with headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, owns around 38000 restaurants in over one hundred countries all over the world. 80% of the six thousand Taco Bell restaurants in the United States are owned and operated by independent local franchisees; total annual customer count in the US alone is well over two billion people.

The predecessor to Taco Bell was the El Taco, four of which opened in the late 1950s and early 1960s in and around San Bernadino, California -- the owner of these El Tacos was named Glen Bell. He opened the very first Taco Bell, named for himself, in 1962 in the town of Downey, California.

The first franchise was sold to an entrepreneur who opened a Taco Bell in Torrance, California. Franchising continued on from there throughout California. By 1967, Anaheim, California was the location of Taco Bell #100. Glen Bell sold the Taco Bell organization to PepsiCo in 1978. Corporate reorganization and mergers eventually resulted in the current ownership by Yum! Brands.

Taco Bell Express

In addition to the normal Taco Bell restaurants, franchises can also be bought for Taco Bell Express locations. Intended for airport terminals, shopping mall food courts, truck stops and highway rest stops, these reduced-size stores have also been set up as interior additions to existing convenience stores. Menus for these quick-stops contain fewer items than the regular Taco Bells and many items are priced at $1 or less. The first Taco Bell Express opened in 1991 in San Francisco, California.

No Taco Bell restaurants were set up outside North America before 2004 -- Canada's first Taco Bell, though, was opened in 1981 in Windsor, Ontario, and many Canadian Taco Bells have been built since then. In chronological order across the globe, Taco Bells have been opened in:

  • Quezon City, Philippines in 2004.
  • Naval Station Rota, Spain, in 2004, but accessible only to those authorized to be on the naval base.
  • Reykjavík, Iceland in 2006.
  • Madrid, Spain, at the Islazul Shopping Mall in 2008.
  • Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at the Dubai Mall in 2008.
  • Limassol, Cyprus, at the MyMall in 2009.
  • Athens, Greece, at the Metro Mall in 2010.
  • Lakeside and Basildon, near London, England, in 2010.

Taco Bell locations also opened during the first decade of the 21st century in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Taco Bell Coupons

Taco Bell is known for running coupon and free food promotions based on current events. For example, in 2001, when the Russian Space Station Mir was about to make an uncontrolled re-entry from orbit into the Earth's atmosphere, the Taco Bell corporation had a large target towed out to sea off the Pacific coast of the US and announced that everyone in the US would get a free taco if the any falling part of Mir hit the target. No part of Mir hit the target.

In 2007, Taco Bell set up a promotion to give everyone in the US a free taco if anyone stole a base in baseball's World Series. In Game Two of the 2007 series, Jacoby Ellsbury, a center-fielder for the Boston Red Sox. stole a base and Taco Bell paid off, treating everyone in the US who came to a store and asked for a free taco.

Additional Promotions

History repeated itself the following year, when Taco Bell set up an identical promotion. Jason Bartlett, a shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays, stole a base in Game One of the 2008 World Series, and Taco Bell again treated all Americans to a free taco.

Taco Bell still sponsors a continuing promotion at basketball home games for the Cleveland (Ohio) Cavaliers and the Portland (Oregon) Trail Blazers. All attendees at home games get a coupon for one free chalupa if the score for the home team equals or exceeds one hundred points.

Current promotions for coupons and free food can be found at Taco Bell's website and you can register to get email offers and news of other Taco Bell promotions.
