Need to Login Now?

Since the server came back up after being down on Monday, it seems our wiki page (Stanfordjujitsu) requires you to login to edit it now. Am I missing something and this is how it's supposed to be, or is this a bug? Jodirren 21:02, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

I verified I can't edit any wiki unless I'm logged in. But worse, I can't even see how someone creates a new account if they don't already have on. What is going on? Jodirren 21:12, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Lock Request

Thanks again for the wiki and for rv'ing the spam on BlackRockRollerDisco2006. Can you please lock that page (completely or from anon edits); it's an archive now; the main page is BlackRockRollerDisco.
P.S.: If you want to make me an admin, that would be nice and I'll take care of it. Right now, whenever I rv spam, it stays in the history. I'm an admin at wiki.fastmail.fm. I'll limit my use to spam issues if you'd like. --Elvey 13:35, 9 August 2007 (EDT)

Spam Blacklist Removal Request

Hi, I've made a www.tinyurl.com/yr56gv bluewiki page concerning some parasites, specifically Trypanos_oma cruzi. But the spam filter is preventing me from using / linking any word containing s_oma (remove the underscore) . I get the following error message:
The following text is what triggered our spam filter: s_oma (without the underscore)

Let me know if you can remove s o m a from the spam filter. Thanks in advance! -- : Blueboom 14:05, 21 August 2007 (EDT)

And less than an hour later, on the same page as above. Another filtered spam word i'm requesting to remove from the spam list: a_mbien (without the underscore) for my T.b. Gam_biense section. Sorry for the trouble .-. -- : Blueboom 14:47, 21 August 2007 (EDT)

On a related note, User:Metropolisforever seemd to have closed Shock Sites due to the spam filter, Not much we can do, but I worry a bit that the filerting may drive away users we have --KaiAdin 00:10, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

I tried loading that page this afternoon and it took forever & I couldn't open BluWiki again until I had restarted my browser. I messaged Sam elsewhere and said "Uhoh, looks like BluWiki is down" when it wasn't (silly me).  Nathan (talk) / 04:13, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Update? : Blueboom 18:02, 6 September 2007 (EDT) 18:02, 6 September 2007 (EDT)

I agree that the spam blacklist is driving users away - the blacklist SUCKS and is contrary to the whole philosophy of BluWiki. Only thing is, I don't have time to revert the massive amounts spam caused by vandals when the blacklist is down. Any suggestions?
Blueboom - how about these temporary solutions:
  1. I'll remove any keywords you request, if you agree to monitor bluwiki for spam related to that keyword (instructions).
  2. Or, you can use this HTML obfuscation tool to trick the filter. For example, soma and ambien --Sam Odio 11:53, 10 September 2007 (EDT)

Hi, Sam, thanks so much for the HTML obfuscation tool. It's a slight PITA, but it solves the problem for me. ForestForTrees 21:17, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Page permissions

From BluWiki:What BluWiki Is: "..I am working to develop a hack where creators of new pages can set page permissions - which will control who can view / edit a page. I feel this is important to allow free expression yet prevent anarchy."

Hopefully this will help in some way: You might want to coordinate with Centiare.com because they've already done this. To explain how they have it set up: Anything that a user creates in the Directory: space is only editable to that user and view-only to anyone else. I'm sure that could be adaptable to here if they're willing to share the code.  Nathan (talk) 00:46, 3 September 2007 (EDT)

Any movement on this? it's one of the principal features that drew me toward bluwiki in the first place, and I feel a little deceived by the message on BluWiki:About that says "BluWiki is unique in that original page authors normally decide who can edit their page" - am I missing something? is this functionality already there or is it "coming soon?" I'd really like the ability to decide who can and can't edit the site I'm hoping to set up...--Dbgerhard 18:12, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

I had always assumed that this was in more of an ethereal sense in that in a wikipedia style fashion of believing that users in a community would respect each others property, peace between fellow men and so on, but it is already plain that is is not happening as such in the case of Bluwiki. To reduce the amount of spam, a spam black list has been put in place, but some users find it is too restrictive and on the other hand it also lets a lot of spam through even thorough the SysOps (currently the three of us) strive to revert and remove spam as it comes up.
To answer your question though, it is still in development, though when it may be implemented is up in the air. --KaiAdin 08:47, 21 September 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for the clarification. I'm aware of the "trust the community to make appropriate changes" way of doing things and for some of my projects that is fine, but for others I do need actual edit privileges, so I will have to go elsewhere for those. For the more "Wiki-like" of my wiki needs, though, bluwiki is great. thanks for its existence. --Dbgerhard 11:25, 21 September 2007 (EDT)

Hi...just wanted to find out what the status is on implementing access control to editing a page. A community of us are interested in creating a wiki here, but are afraid of any vandalizing since it seems that anyone can go into an article and have their way with it. Or are there security measures in place I don't know about. We are a bit concerned about this - we'd only like certain users to be able to edit, and with adminstrator approval. Thanks...-- 18:53, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Shock Sites

Is there any way to remove the spam-filter for the shocksites page only?. It seems to have destroyed the site completely (you can't save the page if any of the entries are blacklisted). Removing it for the shocksites page only would allow that page to still be edited, while allowing spam to be filtered independently.

Perhaps, another option would be, that moderators can, when requested, un-spam-filter certain pages?. This would mean that new pages have the spam filter and so can't be used for spam, while established pages can be free of the filter which, in the case of SHock Sites, has prevented the page from being edited at all!.

Unless of course the spam-filter is intended to stop the Shock Sites page - and if that is the case, it is of course your choice as Bluwiki is your site, on your server!

No, unfortunately the spamfilter applies to the whole site. It's not selective in that way. I'm sure Sam can figure something out.  Nathan (talk) 08:02, 11 September 2007 (EDT)

Interesting Page

I was thinking, on the Main Page just some sort of an "featured article" kind of link to a page on bluwiki, but without the page looking like or sounding a featured article on wikipedia, just something thats Interesting that we may have found on our wanderings through Special:RecentChanges, Special:Popularpages or Special:Longpages or anything else for that matter.

Basically, something that can draw attention to Bluwikiians pages and show off what people can do on Bluwiki --KaiAdin 17:09, 14 September 2007 (EDT)

Personal Info

Hey Sam, just wanting to give you the heads up, theres been a group of people (well Nathan sees it as one person with a lot of sockpuppets) placing personal information on a series of pages related to a Fraternity Pledges as a sort of directory I guess, basically its very detailed, including numbers emails and likes/dislikes, DOB (!) and addresses/phone numbers(!!). I support the notion of removing the information until it can be ascertained that all people involved have stated their willingness to have this all on Bluwiki. --KaiAdin 15:45, 23 September 2007 (EDT)

OK, I trust your judgement in this. We should call one of the numbers and let them know someone is putting their info online --Sam Odio
Kai has e-mailed all the e-mail addresses mentioned (see his talk) with no responses as of yet. We're going to go ahead and delete them and explain on the users' talk as to why.  Nathan (talk) 16:52, 23 September 2007 (EDT)
I've added a bit about personal information in BluWiki:Policy (basically a copyedit from Wikipedia). Feel free to edit and tweak if necessary until it works for you.  Nathan (talk) 17:33, 23 September 2007 (EDT)
I've been contacted by one of the users (if not, the user) who has been adding this info and he's asking for the pages to be undeleted. I will do so, of course, and remove the contact information and birthdates.  Nathan (talk) 18:41, 23 September 2007 (EDT)
Nathan, you might want to update BluWiki:Policy to include some bit about users adding their own personal information. Otherwise, I'll be in violation! See Sam_Odio#My_Contact_Information... --Sam Odio 17:57, 26 September 2007 (EDT)
Well, the thing about it being a Wiki policy is that anyone can edit it and change it if they feel it doesn't work for them. :-) I think I've changed it a little. How's this?  Nathan (talk) 19:18, 26 September 2007 (EDT)

Spam protection

I've semi-protected a whole slew of BluWiki: pages and system-used categories in an effort to curb spam. Hopefully it helps. :)  Nathan (talk) 22:07, 29 September 2007 (EDT)

Pulldown Menu

Hello, is there anyway I can create a template that utilises the javascript needed to make a pulldown-like table, like the one used by TOC? Thanks. --Q V 09:22, 25 December 2007 (EST)

You can't use JS in templates. Happy Holidays.  Nathan (talk) 10:36, 25 December 2007 (EST)
Happy holidays to you too. What I mean is, is there any way to utilise the built-in function of TOC for self-made templates? I know that JavaScript can't be used, but it is also a fact that the current TOC uses JavaScript function to work. In Wikipedia, they have a Template:Hidden that can do the trick, I was thinking of emulating the same function here. --Q V 10:42, 25 December 2007 (EST)
You can use __TOC__ or __NOTOC__ inside a template, yes. Just type it like that. You can also use that Wikipedia template here (though you'd have to retype and save it).  Nathan (talk) 10:52, 25 December 2007 (EST)
No, it's not an attempt to use TOC, but to create a table that can be shown and hide with a mouse click, just like TOC. Sadly, it does not work. I have copied the codes of that said template line-by-line. See here Template:Hidden for that failed attempt. It just does not work. Oh well... --Q V 11:02, 25 December 2007 (EST)
BluWiki doesn't use the new bleeding edge version of MediaWiki, so I suppose that's the problem.  Nathan (talk) 11:14, 25 December 2007 (EST)

eMail authentification, Re-Design, group rights

Hell, Sam O. ! I just registrated http://sinn_macher.bluwiki.com and wanted to authorisate my eMail address. I got an eMail with the confirmation link. But... with linking the relevant URL I get for the "Confirm E-mail adderss" from BluWiki following error message "Invalid confirmation code. The code may have expired". What's wrong ??

With a 3rd attempt of reactivating the code the link I got by 3rd eMail was accepted from the system. So hopefully the eMail to user function works. --JayAr 01:51, 10 February 2008 (EST)
As a BluWiki admin, I can confirm that you don't need to do anything ever again and your e-mail address is confirmed until you change it.  Nathan (talk) 13:25, 10 February 2008 (EST)

2nd: I want set the monobook as the primar design for my mainpage. I can change the preferences within my personal account (for me singular as user), but yet the design for simple anonymous visitors is that of Bluwiki.com. How to change ?

Sorry, you can't. You can't use Monobook, nobody can - it's the default BluWiki skin only for everyone.  Nathan (talk) 13:25, 10 February 2008 (EST)
I wish to correct Nathan's statement: I am using Monobook just fine. You can user Monobook; however, Nathan is correct: you cannot set Monobook to be the skin for your page(s); rather, each user chooses the skin for all the pages. Does that make sense? --jcarroll 12:12, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

And it seems I cannot edit the Main page. But I need to inform the user what he/she will find at "Sinn-Macher" (Sense-Maker). I have no problem to set in the top some links to animate the user for clicking to some more informatoins about BluWiki. Actually the whole page is filled with advertising about BluWiki. That's contradictive and disturbs the orientation of my users... How to maintain/edit ?

You can't edit the main page because it's actually our main page. Main Page is BluWiki's main page. Main Page/ was your edit (users might get confused with that). The main page for your subdomain is located at Sinn macher.  Nathan (talk) 23:47, 10 February 2008 (EST)
I found out on my own just by luck I wanted to leave a comment on the talk page how to change the main page (don't really know how it worked ???). Meanwhile I can edit the frontpage under http://sinn_macher.bluwiki.com/go/Sinn_macher ;-) --JayAr 08:28, 10 February 2008 (EST)

3rd: I'd like to set an attractive logo left top insted this simple (boaring) symbols of babyblue gear wheels and a flavicon. How to maintain ? From Wikipedia and the manuals at MediaWiki there is named a localsettings.php. How to get access ? - I am confidenced with FTP so where to find the access datas for the FTP login ?? (Same I'd need for administrate the user rights (Bureaucrat, Admin/Sysop, User, Anonymous).)

You can't do any of those things. You can't change the sidebar. You can't change internal MediaWiki functions and you can't edit LocalSettings.php because it belongs to BluWiki. LocalSettings.php is not editable from inside of BluWiki anyway. All of these things are an important part of the BluWiki site. The subdomain is only a redirection to another page inside of BluWiki. It does not give you your own personal, customizable wiki with a brand new database - it uses the same database as the rest of BluWiki.
Allow me to illustrate. Click nathan.bluwiki.com, then click Nathan. The two pages look the same because they're the same page. If you need to be able to have your own personal wiki, you can check out editthis.info (we are not affiliated with them in any way).  Nathan (talk) 13:25, 10 February 2008 (EST)

4th: I adapted the time settings to my local time (overtaken from the computer clock) to -1 to UTC. But the time stamp of my facsimile always shows ETC. How can I change from US to Central European TIme Zone (I am settled in North Germany/Hamburg).

The default timezone for signing messages is always EST. You can't change it. Sorry for the inconvenience.  Nathan (talk) 13:25, 10 February 2008 (EST)

Would thank you for a quick reply. See you --SM-WikiSysop 01:32, 10 February 2008 (EST)

How to maintain the Sidebar ??

A MediaWiki individually is possible to be structure with it's Sidebar in a sub domain adapted to the relevant content with the following link (as an example of my WIki @ BluWiki.com): http://sinn_macher.bluwiki.com/go/MediaWiki:Sitebar (alternatively: http://sinn_macher.bluwiki.com/go/index.php/MediaWiki:Sitebar ). Under both addresses is no sidebar (????) - How is it possible ?? - Please would thank you for the correct URL address. Thank you. --JayAr 08:20, 10 February 2008 (EST)

As I said above, you can't change the sidebar. You don't seem to understand: By creating a subdomain on BluWiki, this is not the same as simply giving you your own wiki. A subdomain is only a redirect to an existing page here on BluWiki, it is not a brand new wiki with a brand new database. It uses the same database as the rest of BluWiki.
I think we'll be working on giving users their own customizable wikis sometime in the future but I can't tell you how long.  Nathan (talk) 23:37, 10 February 2008 (EST)

Subpages question

Okay, so I've managed to make (and utterly completely abuse) subpages in User namespaces (ie mine) and see that they work on Talk pages, but I just tried to create one for an actual main namespace article aaaand it didn't show the link series at the top indicating it was a subpage. Just want to know if it's possible, and if it is, what I did wrong; and if it's not, to politely request this ability be added. With much love to the admins, AlishaShatogi 20:10, 11 December 2008 (UTC) <3

First, I'd like to thank you a bunch for providing this functionality. We are just in the midst of archiving all of our material, so it is really nice to be able to do so.

The problem is, some of our pages have so many edits that Export simply refuses to export them, meaning that there is essentially no clean way to get a dump of all the history. The two problematic pages are RC procrastination and Video Game Olde Crew. Is there anything you can do to make the pages "dumpable" without losing any history? Perhaps the history could be split between two articles, or export could be allowed to run a little longer?

With thanks, nneonneo talk 06:09, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Page protection

Hi, Sam.

I was wondering if you could protect Peelameal/Boards. The wiki contains price information that many are concerned may be changed by anyone, so I was wondering if there was a way to protect it so that only me and other authorized users are allowed to edit the page. Thanks. RJaguar3 22:14, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

As it says in Help:User Help, we have no access controls. That is a feature that Sam wants added at some point.
There are four protection levels to any page: sysops only, everyone, logged in users only, or nobody. That's it. The whole point of a wiki is so that information may be changed by anyone at any time. —  Nathan (talk) 22:17, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Okay, can you semi-protect the page (registered users only), please? RJaguar3 22:48, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
Done. —  Nathan (talk) 22:48, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

AutoCAD Wiki is at wikia.com. We are not compatible with the ads they are unable to control for us. Bluwiki looks cool. Can you give me confidence in the longevity and management of Bluwiki? I'm not too comfortable with a sole proprietorship. Tom Haws 16:27, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Database/server crashes?

Hey Sam,

I've been getting a lot of "500 - Internal Server Error"s and SQL database errors as of late, is something up? Should I be backing up my group's project? :p Is it because of the MediaWiki upgrade mentioned on the Bluwiki front page? Sometimes these errors would last hours at a time - the latest was from midnight last night until roughly now. It's becoming a nuisance. Please, help!

And again, thanks for all your hard work keeping Bluwiki ticking.

Thanks for the heads up. We were having a few problems with the database but those should have been fixed by now. If you're still having any issues - drop me a line. --Sam Odio 18:16, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
