Site Suggestions

  1. Use two equals signs for top-level heading (as on Wikipedia) so as to be less heavy in appearance and marginally "shorter" so as to reduce scrolling need.
  2. Investigate, and either fix or explain, whatever it is that keeps telling me I have new messages but seems to be referring to my talk page, unchanged since the first time I looked at it today.
  3. See my reply about index versus categories on the portal's talk page. I like it, so I'm going to repeat some of it elsewhere.

Working on the second point. Can only seem to find one other mention of this happening on another wiki. If you can find any more information about it, post here.
Not sure on how to go about the first point... still doing additional research.
Replied to the last point on the portal talk page. --Sam Odio 20:44, 11 February 2006 (EST)

On Wikipedia, if you do not want the external icon displayed next to an external link, you put it in <span class="plainlinks"></span>. Is there an equivalent here? Linuxerist L / T 21:56, 20 March 2006 (EST)

Subpages

Question: If I were to create a page here could I create subpages for it? I would assume that using the / after my main page would be the best way to do this, can you confirm this for me? - Nerdvana <<8 Mar 2006 - 3:25pm EST>>
Yes, using the / will create a sub page. However, only in user space will these sub pages link back to the main page. --Sam Odio 17:54, 10 March 2006 (EST)
Thanks for the answer. I was trying a non-web based Wiki called WikidPad this last week, didn't meet my needs. I've set up my user page now, will set up more later. --Nerdvana, 15:40 17 Mar 2006 (EST)

How to Mark Pages for Deletion

Another Question: Delete page isn't available. I typoed on creating a page title (and a category title potentially). Should I just tell you about them so you can delete them or am I missing the link somewhere? --Nerdvana, 13:26 19 Mar 2006 (EST)
See Template_talk:Pd for instructions on how to add your page to the "Pages to delete" category. --Sam Odio 14:16, 19 March 2006 (EST)
Excellent. Thanks for the reply on this! I have another question to add (and took out the previous question about Images, its redundant now); I'll add the new one as a separate one below this answer. --Nerdvana, 17:13 19 Mar 2006 (EST)

Question about Pages to Delete

Moved on 4 July 2006 from the Questions section.

What is going on with the Pages to Delete Category? It hasn't been cleared for months.

Nerdvana, I've made you a sysop. Feel free to maintain the Pages to Delete Category. --Sam Odio
Very good. I've started working on that for you. --Nerdvana 17:08, 4 July 2006 (EDT)

Wanted Pages by Main Namespace Entry?

Wanted Pages Question: I was curious if it was possible to have a wanted page that would limit the results to only those pages that are subpages under mine. If it isn't possible, that's fine, but if it was that would ROCK. --Nerdvana, 17:15 19 Mar 2006 (EST)

I don't know if you have seen this or not Sam, but is this idea impossible? Or is it just something that cannot be explored at this time?

Sorry, I should have signed the second item there. Still wondering if that is a possible item to explore or if it isn't feasable. Any idea Sam? --Nerdvana 08:30, 8 April 2006 (EDT)
I'm not aware of a way to limit the Special:Wantedpages page to just your user space. You could always maintain a simple list of wanted pages, though. --Sam Odio 21:26, 8 April 2006 (EDT)
No worries. I've been using Ctrl-F on the wanted page. It works. --Nerdvana 21:37, 8 April 2006 (EDT)

BluWiki Logo Question: Have you considered licensing the BluWiki logo under the GFDL or another free license? I was wanting it for Wikipedia, which I know you are an editor at. I put up a fair use image, but it is best to have as few fair use as possible. (Article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BluWiki ) Linuxerist L / T 02:21, 20 March 2006 (EST)
Uploaded the original copy of the logo under GFDL. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. --Sam Odio 16:00, 23 March 2006 (EST)
Thanks, retagged as GFDL. :) Linuxerist L / T 21:57, 23 March 2006 (EST)

Odd Occurance on 23 Mar 2006

Sam, thought you aught to know that you did this last edit not logged in (I saw your talk edited by an IP and immediately came here to check on it - I am including part of the e-mail text below for your convenience). --Nerdvana 16:16, 23 March 2006 (EST)

Dear Nerdvana,

the BluWiki page User talk:Sam Odio has been changed on 20:57, 23 March 2006
by anonymous user 128.143.247.205, see
Nerdvana, thanks for the due diligence. As it happens I was on a public computer - and forgot to log in (since I'm usually editing on my PC, which automatically logs me in) --Sam Odio 09:40, 24 March 2006 (EST)
No problem. I kind of figured that out anyway, but still... If I am watching a page I'm part of the "home guard" I figure. *wink* --Nerdvana 11:29, 24 March 2006 (EST)

User Created Templates

Just curious, Sam, if you would allow users to create templates for their own use. I think I can determine how to do this from Template_talk:Pd, just wanted to be sure that it was not disallowed. --Nerdvana 11:29, 24 March 2006 (EST)

You definitely can create your own templates. Generally it's preferred if you create them in your own namespace, though (Like User:Sam_Odio/Top which appears on Sam Odio) --Sam Odio 11:55, 27 March 2006 (EST)
Thanks! That will help out alot. --Nerdvana 12:42, 27 March 2006 (EST)

How To Set Up A TOC Panel In Media Wiki

Question: How would I go about setting up a contents pannel like has been done here on Fallen_Empire? A link will be sufficient, I just cannot find it anywhere... --Nerdvana, 10:55 18 Mar 2006 (EST)
Nerdvana, if you're talking about Fallen Empire's links and pictures at the top of the page, just copy the source code and paste in your wiki - I've singled out the source code you need here: User:Sam Odio/Content. You of course, would want to change the links / image.
No, this isn't what I meant, but as I may want to do that could you leave that page up for now? --N
If you're talking about the table of contents, or TOC, that is automatically generated based on your headings. If you want an example of how the headings are used to create the TOC, take a look at the source code I've written in the Sandbox. Hurry up though, because I'm sure others will play around with it. --Sam Odio 11:17, 18 March 2006 (EST)
Yes, this is what I meant. However, I had already done that and didn't get a TOC. Check out Creation Et All. I don't see what is different there either... --Nerdvana, 11:52 18 Mar 2006 (EST)
I figured it out. I don't have enough headings. Ok, thanks! --[User:Nerdvana|N]], 12:07 18 Mar 2006 (EST)

BluWiki Disambiguation Pages

Sam, I was curious if it would be a problem to create a disambiguation page or two. The best example I can think of is for the Roman Gods/Planets - both Fallen Empire and my Creation Et All have gods named after/based on the Roman Gods (Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Saturn). I would bet that Seanr451 would like those to come up on a search for the names as much as I would. I think I'd link to anything in our namespace and to the Wikipedia disambiguation page for the same word. What do you think? --Nerdvana 11:35, 28 March 2006 (EST)

As of right now, the policy is to create a disambiguation page when two users are claiming the same name.
Honestly, feel free to use the disambiguation pages a liberally as you wish, if you think they can help the end-user find the content he/she is looking for. --Sam Odio 20:43, 28 March 2006 (EST)
Excellent. Thanks! --Nerdvana 06:31, 29 March 2006 (EST)
FYI. I have created a disambiguation category and fixed up the disambiguation template now for you Sam. --Nerdvana 12:53, 29 March 2006 (EST)

Subpages and Main Space Pages with Name Changes

Do you know if one were to change the name of a main page (Say my Creation Et All for example) would the pages beneath it fall in line with the new name or have to be moved individually? --Nerdvana 02:06, 11 July 2006 (EDT)

I'm pretty sure you'd have to move each page individually. --Sam Odio 02:27, 11 July 2006 (EDT)
That's what I figured also. K. Thanks. :) --Nerdvana 02:31, 11 July 2006 (EDT)

Notes To Sam

Sam, I hope you don't mind, but I was seeing so many questions on here I thought better subdivision would help. So I set up Subheadings in the Site Settings and the Formatting sections. Since most of it was mine and it allows things to be seen better I thought it would be ok. -- Nerdvana, 08:05 23 Mar 2006 (EST)

No problem, thanks for cleaning it up! --Sam Odio 11:56, 27 March 2006 (EST)

Name

Sam, I thought your name is Sam. I know this sounds really silly, but your name is written as John Zhou in your personal information near the bottom and I'm assuming that it's the result of vandalism. --Funnykid 03:01, 17 May 2006 (EDT)

Thanks, looks like someone already fixed it. --Sam Odio 20:42, 3 July 2006 (EDT)

Page Picture

Your picture is gone from the main page.

Thanks, I had moved all the pics to User:Sam_Odio/Pictures. Think most users don't visit that page though, so I'll put my mug shot back up on the main page. --Sam Odio 20:42, 3 July 2006 (EDT)

Spam-filter

I do not understand why the word Socia lism triggers the spam filter just because it contains the word cia lis (words intentionally seperated!) Thank you for your comment! --Ghormax 18:07, 25 June 2006 (EDT)

Ghormax, thanks for pointing this out. We've had a terrible problem with pharmacy linkspam, in particular cialis. Nevertheless, I have removed "cialis" from the spam filter, to prevent your problem in the future.
If you can, help us out by periodically searching bluwiki for "cialis" and removing any link spam. --Sam Odio 20:33, 3 July 2006 (EDT)

OdioWorks Website

Hey there. I like the new site but the link at the bottom to the old one isn't working. Thought you should know. --Nerdvana 21:10, 10 July 2006 (EDT)

Thanks, it looks like the link broke when I deleted the backup of the old site. I've redirected it to the wayback machine. --Sam Odio 21:54, 10 July 2006 (EDT)
No problem. Things like that happen. --Nerdvana 02:02, 11 July 2006 (EDT)

Spam

Hey Sam there's a Vandal doing a whole ton of spamming down here especially on Talk Pages, he/it keeps changing their ip address too...

-- KaiAdin 14:14, 16 July 2006 (EDT)

KaiAdin, I blocked the offending URLS. This should prevent them from posting links to their pages in the future. I think I also removed most of the spam, but I'm not sure if I found it all. If you find any repeat spammers that I missed, post the URLS here and I will block them.
Thanks for that -- KaiAdin 10:08, 19 July 2006 (EDT)

Vandalism

I don't know how to go about reporting vandalism but here's one:

Nathan (talk) 20:16, 23 July 2006 (EDT)

Nathan,
Thanks for the heads up. I reverted the spam and blocked the offending URLs. If you see any more, let me know. --Sam Odio 20:51, 23 July 2006 (EDT)

Nathan (talk) / 21:01, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks again. After finding your revert I was able to find & revert the same spam on other pages. Blocked the URL. Hopefully we won't see anymore from stikipad now that they've shut the spammers down. --Sam Odio 17:15, 25 July 2006 (EDT)

[[[User:Nathan|Nathan]] (talk) / 22:40, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. Blocked the URL and removed all other instances of the spam I could find. --Sam Odio 19:40, 27 July 2006 (EDT)

It's IP, not URL. A URL is a web address. Bub 01:15, 28 July 2006 (EDT)

Bub, Thanks for your helpful comment - but it actually is a URL that I blocked, not an IP address. The spammers either spoof their IP address or are submitting the spam from thousands of different machines (possibly infected by trojan viruses). Because of the huge number of different IP addresses used, blocking their IPs is futile. It may also cause collateral damage if legitimate IPs are blocked.
Instead, I simply block the URLs of the sites they spam. For example, after Nathan's comment I blocked the string "alanburn.awardspace.c0m" (typo intended). This was the URL of the most recent spam attack. --Sam Odio 02:38, 28 July 2006 (EDT)
