Definitions

The following are important parasitology definitions

Incidence

Number of new cases in time t / Population at risk

Prevalence

(# old cases + new cases in time t) / Total Population

Positive Predictive Value (PPV)

Proportion of patients identified by a test as having a disease who actually have the disease.

Specificity

Proportion of patients without the disease who are correctly identified by the test.

Sensitivity

Proportion of patients with the disease who are correctly identified by the test.

Anemia

Condition in which the Hemoglobin concentration in the peripheral blood is lower than normal for age, sex and pregnancy of the subject.

Zoonoses

"Those disease naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man"

Xenodiagnosis

Method of Diagnosis for various parasites. Using a clean vector to have a blood meal on a patient. Then analyzing the blood of the vector to see if a suspected parasite is present. This provides a reliable form of diagnosis.
