There are a great many methods of casting on. The one you choose will depend on what you want in your edge.

Knit on cast on. This method is similar to the knit stitch. In fact, when you are done with it, you will have done your first row of knitting. It's a bit tighter than the long tail cast on.

Cable cast on. This method makes a very elegant, but not a very stretchy one.

Reverse loop cast on. This is a high speed, easy cast on that doesn't give you a very good edge. You cannot use this for knitting in the round because of the growing gap that forms between the stitches on the first row.

Long tail cast on. This is the most popular and versatile cast on. When it is done you will have a row of knitting. It gives a stretchy and lovely edge.
