Clairol Hair Color History

Clairol is currently a division of Proctor and Gamble, though the product line did not begin as a Proctor and Gamble entity. It was launched in 1931 by a spousal team of a chemist and businessman and his wife, Joan and Lawrence M. Gelb. The couple discovered a hair coloring mixture in France and named the product Clairol.

They imported the solution to the United States and began selling it to beauty salons with much success. In 1950, the Clairol Company launched Miss Clairol Hair Color Bath. Miss Clairol product consisted of a one step hair color formula that could be done at home. In just six short years, the product was largely popularized.

Clairol Beginnings

In 1959, a company called Bristol-Myers Squibb buys Clairol from Joan and Lawrence Gelb, though the couple's sons, Bruce Gelb, and Richard Gelb, took on the roles of executives at the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. In the year 1965, Clairol launches the Nice 'n' Easy product.

It was the first hair color product that could be shampooed in and then rinsed out. The catchphrase for Nice 'n' Easy was "the closer he gets, the better you look." Eight years later, Richard Gelb becomes the Chief Executive Officer of Bristol-Myers Squibb and in 2001, the entire Clairol division was purchased by Proctor and Gamble.

In today's hair care market, Clairol hair color products are among the most popular. Thousands of customers snatch home hair color products off of the shelves and the business is prospering.
