If you cannot find your question in the help area, please feel free to ask help questions here. They will be answered and archived frequently.

Please make a new section for the current month (see here for how) and post under it. It's easier to keep track of questions and when they were posted. If you remove any questions, please leave a comment with a link to where they were moved to.

Can bluwiki be used for hosting entirely commercial and public wikis? Yes! You can host any wiki you like, within the boundaries of common sense. There is another wiki site available at MyWikiBiz, where they can help you with advertising and promotion. That's not really what we're equipped to do.

Can I use my own domain name, say www.XYZ.com, so the users won't see bluwiki.com in the URL of any of the pages on my wiki? Yes, you can use a domain name as a redirect but it will still redirect to a *.bluwiki.com URL. Sorry, we aren't equipped to change that yet.

Can I insert advertisments from my google adsense account? Unfortunately no (and this goes for any website not just AdSense) and that feature is not likely to be added. Put simply, this would require installing a MediaWiki plugin to turn the HTML of the ads into a MediaWiki tag. Although these plugins do exist, we do not plan on using them because that is not part of what we do. If you absolutely need to do this, MyWikiBiz does allow AdSense ads. BluWiki may have ads of its own (from Adsense), this helps us pay our bills.

Can I have customisable forms which user will be able to fill in when editing or creating standard pages. For example I could have a form for a biography page. Anytime someone adds a new person's biography to my wiki, they will just fill in a form. You can make a template, which can include some sort of "barebones" page the user can fill out and expand if needed. Other than that, that's the only way I know of.

Suppose a user sets up an account on my bluwiki hosted wiki, will I be able to take that user account away with me, if some day in the future I choose to host my wiki somewhere else? No, all accounts on BluWiki share the same database.

can I set a template to automatically include itself when editing a new page on My personal wiki? Yes. Wikipedia's help page on templates is here. It works the same way here as there.

Can, and if so, how can I delete my account (as a user)? You cannot. It would be very time-intensive to delete all of a person's contributions. Just stop using your account or change the password to something you won't remember again.

Some of my links to subpages at http://ausfehlernlernen.bluwiki.com/go/Ausfehlernlernen do not seem to work anymore. "Beispiel: Müll" does not work, "Beispiel: Schmierpapier" works. Maybe because of the German "ü"? What do you think? BluWiki's support of Unicode is not complete. Try to use normal English letters, no accents. It will be fixed sometime in future.

Can I set up a Wiki that can only be accessed by a certain community of users? For example, would it be possible to restrict access to a certain range of IPs, or give access only to invited users? My group wants to create a wiki, but doesn't want it available to our competitors at the moment. No, we don't have any form of access control at present. This is one of the projects that Sam wants completed that he needs help with. (Can you help?)

1)please tell me the easy process to use my own domain .It's better if you give the numeric IP adress .I will edit my settings to my domain by using Zoneedit.com . 2)Can i add Adbrite, pagads and other affliate adcodes in html pages . 3)Can i use telugu an indian language.
1) I recommend EveryDNS. All you should need to do is add a CNAME entry for bluwiki.com.

2) I've already answered this in October, please check the answer there.

3) I really don't know. Try it.

Is it OK that people are setting up their own independent wikis on the domain that I created? Should I just ignore them? Hrairoo 03:42, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

You aren't understanding the nature of subdomains here. It isn't a subdomain (or domain) reserved just for you and you alone, complete with your own user database, your own access controls, admin access to delete/protect any page you like, etc etc. Because everything on the wiki relies on one database (not one for each user), this means anyone can make pages. ie, I can go and make a page yoursubdomain.bluwiki.com/go/thisismypage, which is exactly the same as bluwiki.com/go/thisismypage. That is how the wiki works. The subdomain (or domain) only acts like a shortcut to the real page, which is located at http://bluwiki.com/go/yourpagegoeshere
Gotcha. So I'm thinking that probably these people are not actually posting to "my" subdomain--they only appear to me to be in the same subdomain, because it's actually all one domain?
Correct.
Do you run into a lot of problems with people trying to pick names for pages that are already taken by another wiki? Hrairoo 04:28, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Not really, no. We don't have a log with those sorts of errors. The end user gets the error and has to choose again.

I am trying to verify my email address, and I get the error "Could not send confirmation mail. Check address for invalid characters." I don't have any characters in my email address. Can you help me with this?--Krauschristopher1 15:13, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

I'll get it looked at.

Where do I report bugs? It seems that the heuristic for colouring external links is a bit odd, some valid URLs like http://www.gnu.org are drawn in orange while others like http://www.gnu.org/foo are drawn in blue. I haven't figured out the system yet, but it seems that an URL needs to have a sufficient number of path components (for some hard-to-understand definition of path component) in order to be drawn in blue. --Erik Sandberg 07:57, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

It depends on your browser, not some complicated made-up formula. Your browser's settings may override the MediaWiki settings. Links that don't exist are red, otherwise they are blue, otherwise visited links are violet. It's that simple. If you have further concerns, please speak with Sam Odio.

There seems to be a bit of a problem with the Spam filter. When I use the word amb-ient (as one word) it is detected as spam...Is there any way to prevent this from happening? --roelvandoorn 08:58, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

The string "ambien" is spamfiltered. It will be removed from the filter sometime today.
Thanks Nathan for bringing this to my attention. I've removed ambien from the spam filter. You can now type ambient without problems. --Sam Odio 19:12, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Is there any way to format galleries in a more detailed way? At the moment galleries I add always show up in rows of 4, but there seems to be room for bigger rows. I could not find any additional formatting help regarding galleries, but maybe I overlooked it. --roelvandoorn 14:49, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

This is from another site and should answer your question.

Sorry, I'm not good at wiki formatting, but I'll try to phrase my question in a way that it can be understood. A while ago, I set up this page: Thecpedia and subsequent pages. I used Template:Clickpic to get the pictures to link to another internal page rather than their image page. I come back today, and the images aren't showing up, as you can see. As far as I can see, the images are still uploaded, and clicking on their name still directs me to the correct page, but the pictures just aren't showing up. Is there a way to fix this? Is it on my end? Sorry if the question seems ambiguous. -- TrueFr33Will 29 June 2009

No, the question makes sense. Every template from Wikipedia is not going to work here, that's just the way it is. I'll see what I can do to fix the template but don't expect miracles. Sorry, not a whole lot I can do here, templates should come with a disclaimer "use at your own risk". If Template:Click doesn't work for you, I don't know what to suggest. —  Nathan (talk) 21:57, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Ah. I see. I was just confused because it seemed to work and then not. ;D The template you directed me to works great, though. Thanks so much!

Could you please remove the captcha for logged in users? Thanks! -- logixoul.bluwiki.org, 12:30, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

No, and I'll tell you why. Sometimes spammers will try creating an account, then spamming pages. We don't want to take chances. It's a minor inconvenience but you can manage. —  Nathan (talk) 19:00, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

I've just start a subdomain about chess, in Spanish (so, it's named "Ajedrez"). The templates are in English and my question is ¿is it right if I made new templates translated? (By example, the one about incomplete pages, etc). Thanks. Hardland 04:21, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

You can name them anything you want but you can't use accents. Hope this helps. Nathan 21:32, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

How can I protect my wiki with a password? - Thanks for your answer.

I don't know why you want to "protect" your wiki... but wikis work best un protected!. I can see no reason to "protect" -and then make a wiki not as good as it would be. Hardland 14:06, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
I want, that only my group can look in that wiki, because you should´n look in that wiki. Sorry for my bad English.
(Don't worry, I'm no native english speaking). Then... I think you don't really need a wiki "on internet", but a wiki "in a intranet". Anyway, wikis work better while open, so It may be you need something different. 190.134.134.159 12:02, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

August 2010

The server was down on Monday 8/2, but since the server came back yesterday it seems I can't edit my wiki page without logging in. Am I missing something and this is how it's supposed to be, or is this a bug? Worse, assuming that you do in fact now need to login to edit, I can't even see how someone creates a new account if they don't already have one; there is no option anywhere to do so. What is going on? Somebody help?! The martial arts class I'm in uses this to regularly determine attendance for our class, so having this not work is a big problem. Thanks in advance. Jodirren 00:51, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Ditto; both anon accounts and new user creation seems to be impossible. Perhaps there's been a recent spam flood... PLUS, every edit now requires a captcha be solved. (Plus, captcha is weird; the 'words in the captcha aren't even words any more. My current captcha is "rentie used" except 'rentie' isn't a word, and the word 'used' is upside down!) Damn spammers! --Elvey 21:14, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Uh-oh. It's worse than that. I think an Admin account has been hacked. Talk:Guestbook was just edited by an IP, yet I can't edit it while logged in, and it's 100% spam. I'm calling Odioworks. --Elvey 21:27, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, we're calling it quits and are pulling our site and taking it to another wiki. This is way too long of a disruption to make it useful for us .... Jodirren 19:38, 9 August 2010 (UTC)

So can someone responsible, please tell us what is going on as my wiki has effectively been read-only and I will be forced to relocate it if edit is not restored soon. Samlor Tue Aug 10 11:22:15 2010 (UTC+10:00)

Whoops; I didn't call Odioworks 'till just now. Left a message. (It's the weekend.) (http://brrd.bluwiki.com/go/Special:EmailUser/Sam_Odio has no email address.) I also sent email to Charlie, and Nathan. --Elvey 15:55, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
