Ribbing is a very elastic stitch pattern made up of columns of knit stitches and purl stitches.

K1P1 ribbing is done by knitting one stitch and then purling the second, then knitting the third and purling the forth. Continue on in this manner until you get to the end of the row. It is done across an even number of stitches.

K2P2 ribbing is done by knitting two stitches, then purling two stitches, and repeating that across the row. It is done over a multiple of four stitches.

Although these are the most common, some people use K3P3 ribbing and other variations. The main point is that the knit sides of the stitches and the purl sides of the stitches line up one on top of the other.

Ribbing looks like this.
