- Arthashaastra - A Lecture
- Prof. K. S. Kannan, Head, National College, Basavangudi, Bangalore
- ABSTRACT: The Arthashastra of Kautalya has, eversince its publication (1909), been considered a seminal work. Predating Christ easily by three centuries, the work - like Panini's Ashtadhyayi ( or even Bharata's Natyashastra) of the preceding century - superseded all prior works in the field; future works in the tradition hardly show major deviations.
- Misconceptions abound, however, regarding the personality (- even the name,) of the author and his work - even, or rather perhaps especially, among the educated. The Macaulayan machination raised a hardy and proliferating breed of Indian intellectual 'elite', whose very categories and processes of thought (leave alone ideals) were essentially alien; for whom, consequently, indigenous words and ideas could be understood or interpreted only via the paramount & paradigmatic Western modes and notions. And enough damage followed suit, quite soon, quite ineluctably, and quietly. Just to illustrate : Dharma (a key concept in this work also, incidentally) was shorn of all its flavour and force once its emasculated and contorted rendering as 'Religion' gained currency (and is not this vital confusion, a mere linguistic error at first, taking its toll in the chaos that our contemporary politics is, too ?); even the name Kautalya (misspelt Kautilya) conjures up in a modern mind, no more than the rather familiar, though macabre, Machiavellian image — poles apart though the two be; too, the very discipline Arthashastra is maimed and mutilated by a facile misrendering into a mere 'Economics'.
- What, then, is the nature of his work? What constitutes his weltanschuung, and what, his wissenschaft ? Should pride in our past alone be the guiding star, now, in assessing the contents and the relevance of his work - to an increasingly globalising, IT-savvy, modern India ?
- (The speaker is a Prof. of Sanskrit and has done some work in Natural Language Processing. The talk is aimed at introducing the text.)

- A Passage through the Epic KumaraSambhavam
- Enjoy the Beauty of Kalidasa's Poetic Splendour
- Shatavadhani R. Ganesh
- ABSTRACT: Kumarasambhava is one of the two epics penned by the great poet Kalidasa. It has the distinction of occupying a unique place among the pancha mahakavyas of Sanskrit. Here the genius of the poet Kalidasa has sprung very high and the sublime approach of this epic is an all time attraction. Kumarasambhava, an epic of eight cantos is an unmatched creation in Sanskrit for its form and content are equally beautiful and profound.
- The main story centers around the marriage of Shiva and Parvathi. Shiva in penance is taken for a ride by the god of Love Manmatha. However, the cupid will be burnt and the charming Parvathi is disappointed. Later, she determines to win the Lord by her heart and not by the mortal looks. In this venture she succeeds and conveys the universal message of love winning over lust.
- This ground theme is magnificently embellished by the poet through his unmatched imagination. This can be seen in his marvelous description of the mighty Himalayas, the spring season, lofty penance of Parvathi and soul filling marriage of the divine couple.
- This Kumarasambhava is an ever relevant epic to the world in the context of Love, marriage and householdership.
