Project Comments from Migrant Worker

Thank you for your work on this project.

Regarding the new 'skin', whilst it is most welcome to have more of the page, it seems to exacerbate the problems in formatting, specifically the auto-generated TOC. It would be nice to force its position on the page, as one does with images.

The TOC can be disabled by inserting the code __NOTOC__ into your page. You can also specify where in the page the TOC appears by inserting the code __TOC__ --Sam Odio 16:03, 24 September 2006 (EDT)
I'd found those commands but they don't allow one to aesthetically format the page. For instance, I can't get the same layout as with the old default skin. Is there a way of forcing the TOC to sit on the left, as one can with an image. Whereas before I had the TOC on the left and to its right, an image, now the TOC sits below the image and the text wraps around the image. The last application that ever allowed me 100% layout control was the Xerox Ventura Publisher, V2; those were the days! --Migrant Worker 20:38, 24 September 2006 (EDT)
Migrant Worker, try inserting this code in the location where you want your TOC:
<div style="float:left; width: 25em; margin: 1em; clear: both;">__TOC__</div>
Hope that helps. --Sam Odio 20:50, 24 September 2006 (EDT)
Thank you Sam, that has provided an acceptable layout. --Migrant Worker 21:58, 24 September 2006 (EDT)

Auto Log out

I don't understand why I get logged-out after a period of inactivity. It still shows me as being logged-in, until I edit something and try to save, at which point it reverts to my IP.

I am aware of this problem, and looking into a fix. If anyone knows of a way to prevent the MediaWiki code from logging you out automatically, let me know. --Sam Odio 16:03, 24 September 2006 (EDT)

Login status in new skin

You should also display the login status at the top of the page, on the blue bar; in fact the tabbed choices of the old default style ought to be available at the top.

You're right - excellent suggestion. I'll implement it. --Sam Odio 16:03, 24 September 2006 (EDT)

Wiki markup commands

I've searched high and low for a definitive set of commands for this wiki flavour. Whilst there is a useful help page, I notice undocumented commands in other pages, especially your own. Please draw my attention to a reference document.

This flavor of wikis - referred to as "mediawiki" is by far the most popular wiki flavor. You shouldn't have any problem finding help online - just try searching google for mediawiki markup. I'll also try to make the help page a little more robust.
If there are any commands you see me implementing that you are curious about, please don't hesitate to ask me about them. --Sam Odio 16:03, 24 September 2006 (EDT)
I've searched for the mediawiki command set before and now again. Where is the reference document that specifies ALL the valid commands? You must have this because you are using commands that are not in the help files.--Migrant Worker 20:30, 24 September 2006 (EDT)

Spell Checker

It would be real handy to have a spell-checker; even if it is WestPondian-based.

--Migrant Worker 15:36, 24 September 2006 (EDT)

Right now a spell checker for BluWiki is a long way off. It's unfortunate.
However, there are a number of greatly useful alternatives. If you're using a Mac, the Safari browser has spell checking built in. If you're using Windows, Firefox has a spell checking extension. Hope this helps!! --Sam Odio 16:03, 24 September 2006 (EDT)
I use Firefox, I've checked the plugin you've indicated and unfortunately it hasn't supported this browser for quite a while. --Migrant Worker 20:23, 24 September 2006 (EDT)
Here are instructions on how to install spellbound in the latest release of FireFox - http://www.wikihow.com/Install-a-Spell-Checker-Into-Newer-Versions-of-Firefox --Sam Odio 13:29, 25 September 2006 (EDT)
Sam, I've installed it, but I don't believe it is catching/checking correctly; I'll give it a chance :~) --Migrant Worker 16:26, 28 September 2006 (EDT)

Statur Bar

The top blue staus bar isn't being used to its full potential. Since a page loads so as to read from the top, one shouldn't have to immediately navigate to the bottom in order to choose an option. Please consider putting the following items on the bar: LogIn|History|Discussion|(Un)Watch|Preferences. --Migrant Worker 16:31, 28 September 2006 (EDT)

Site Backups

Where is the page content stored and what means are used to provide backups? Should we archive our own pages? --Migrant Worker 21:41, 24 September 2006 (EDT)

Local backups are made daily, and offsite backups are run weekly. However you definitely should make sure you have an archive of your own pages. You can never have too many backups. --Sam Odio 23:20, 24 September 2006 (EDT)
Basckups? I think you need the spell-checker more than I. --Migrant Worker 20:00, 25 September 2006 (EDT)
Migrant Worker, thanks for pointing out my spelling mistake. I guess we're all human, after all! --Sam Odio 04:16, 26 September 2006 (EDT)

Random Comments

Page Protection

I would like to protect pages form alteration; I see contradictory statements concerning this.

At the bottom of the Edit screen it states: "If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then don't submit it here."

On the page at: [1] "BluWiki is unique in that original page authors normally decide who can edit their page."

At the very least one should have to register in order to edit a page.

I can't find a switch/tick-box that will allow me to set read-only attributes to a page.

Please advise. --Migrant Worker 16:25, 28 September 2006 (EDT)

Leaving Longwood

Didn't you get kicked out for violating a rule that was stated on a contract you signed? You should really just grow up and leave this place alone. You clearly have no life if you're still angry at a school that did nothing to you. And do you really think some Wiki is going to make you happy?! Please, just move on and find something else to terrorize. -- anon User talk:

No, I wasn't kicked out - I got a chance to go to UVA and took it. I've never looked back since. And if I've should "grow up," why are you the one hiding in anonymity? --Sam Odio 04:34, 3 August 2006 (EDT)
MattisManzel 11:01, 21 August 2006 (EDT): Some wiki would make me happy at least, hehe. Hi Sam. Nice hive.

Your comment on artwork on Vela Referance Wiki

Well it's more of a collaborative effort. In the artwork I can be credited for the Starship models and flags that I have done. For the characters however they are fully credited to the other artists that I have listed on each page and links. Don't worry I asked for permission before I did this. But thanks for the comment but it should also go those great artists as well.

P.S. I completely forgot how to reply to comments on my discussion page
